I Need a Vacation

It's only my third day back to work and I want to go back on vacation. That's not a good sign. It's not the job. I seem to have a great bunch of students this semester and I have the classes I want to teach at the times I want. The problem? My stupid foot. You really don't realize how much walking you do each and every day until you add crutches into the equations. Now while I can put some weight on my foot, I have to put most of the weight on my crutches or else my foot starts hurting and throbbing. However, by putting the weight on my crutches, my arms get a workout that they aren't used to. Last Friday, my triceps hurt more than my foot did. So much so that I was taking the Vicodin for that pain rather than my foot pain. LOL. Since I put in a full day yesterday, everything hurts today. Thankfully I only have to teach two classes. I just have to make sure I don't overdo it and walk around again today. On a lighter note, I am getting back into stampi...

First Day Back

I ventured back to school today. Bear suggested that I call in sick today (the third day in a row) and just consider this week a wash. However, I was getting so damn antsy. Sitting at home, mostly either in bed or at my desk, has been driving me nuts. I needed to get out. Also, my Thursdays are an easy day. I only have two classes from 1:30-4:30pm and no office hours. If I need to go to school, I might as well do it today, right? Bah. First I had my CERT training. It's the Community Emergency Response Team. My school is offering it and I figured in this day and age it's good to know what to do in case of an emergency. And it's free. Unfortunately, it's on the other side of the main complex so I had to walk...or should I say hobble?...all the way there and back. Ugh. Then, in my classes...could I sit still? No. I just can't sit during my lectures. It's not in my nature. So without thinking about it, I got up, walked around a bit, and just moved wa...

The New Cast

Image
This is the new cast (you can click on the picture to get a bigger version). Personally I like it. It's black, one of my favorite colors, and it's rock hard. This means I can give my students a good kick. Well...as long as I don't use my toes. :)

I Hate Being in a Cast

I'm one of those people who loves to shower. A bath is nice, but on a day to day basis, it needs to be a shower. I can go about 48 hours without a shower before I feel incredibly gross, and that's only if I hadn't been doing anything physical. Unfortunately, being in a cast makes that a bit difficult for me to shower that regularly. Bear, of course, doesn't understand my need for showers. I think most men can go a week without a shower and not feel gross. So last night, I went to take a shower. I thought I was being smart by wrapping a garbage bag around my cast and securing everything with duct tape. Heck, I even duct taped the damn thing to my leg (glad I shaved my legs before the surgery LOL). What I didn't expect was the bag to have a hole it it. By the time I realized that it was too late and my soft cast was sopping wet. I called the doctor to find out what to do but he was out of the office. The assistant told me to blow dry it for the time being ...

Go Giants...err Pats....err Giants!

Well, for the first time, I will enjoy the Super Bowl no matter what happens. Heck, for the first time in quite a number of years I'm looking forward to watching it. Why? Both of my favorite teams are playing each other: the Giants and the Pats. I knew the Pats would make it but the Giants are the surprise. The Giants? Oh man. I didn't even think they would make the playoffs. So who am I rooting for? Both. :) Seriously, I want the Pats to win because they've earned it. However, I won't be disappointed if the Giants win. Now if only the 46" TV we ordered will arrive in time to watch the game.

Ugh.

I am going to have to remember that Keflex and me do not get along very well. It's a common post-surgery antibiotic but my body did not like it. I had severe headaches since the surgery and this morning I woke up with intense nausea. It got so bad that my head and stomach hurt worse than my foot! We called the doc up today and I'm no longer taking the Keflex. I'll have to check in tomorrow but already I feel a lot better. Now if the pain in my foot would just ease up. Argh! While I am continually praising the miracles of modern pharmacology, I really don't like taking pills. Even though I could be blissfully unaware of my surroundings in a legally induced Vicodin haze, I'm only taking it after the pain starts back up. Addiction fears? No not really. When I shattered my ankle in '94, I was taking the max dose of Percocet everyday for six months. If I didn't get addicted to narcotics then, I doubt I will now. I'm one of those weird types who doe...

I Survived the Surgery

Just wanted to give a head's up on the surgery. It went well. There wasn't as much bone damage as they feared which is good but I think there was more tendon damage. I'm in a soft cast which will come off in two weeks so I'm only going to be on crutches (non-weight bearing) for that long. There was much rejoicing. I HATE crutches. I'll keep you updated as things go on.
