Partial Tearing of the Peroneus Brevis Tendon
So I went to Mr. Podiatrist yesterday to get the news about the MRI I had last week. Ironically, the radiologist "thinks" he saw a fracture. I say ironic because I've seen the x-ray. Oh yes, there is a break. Rather, there is a piece of my fifth metatarsal bone (the bone in the middle outside section of my foot) that is no longer attached.
The thing I was not expecting was the partial tear of the peroneus brevis tendon. Say that one five times fast. It is a tendon that connects the fifth metatarsal bone to the peroneus brevis muscle (one of the calf muscles). Here's a picture of it:

When I found out where the problem was, I was not surprised. The original injury occurred when I rolled my foot badly to the outside. This would be the tendon worst affected by that type of injury. Also, this is supposedly a major tendon that, if screwed up severely enough, can be serious.
Mr. Podiatrist said that he wants to avoid surgery to remove this bone as much as possible. Why? This tendon is attached to the floating piece of bone. He would have to separate the tendon from the bone with a laser and then reattach the tendon to the main bone with anchors. If that somehow gets fucked up, I can become disabled. I've been hearing some nasty horror stories about botched foot surgeries so I'm going to agree with my doc on this one.
Until then, I am back in the good ol' air cast, hobbling around with a cane. He's hoping that the bone will start to heal normally. I've also got a "bone stimulator" that I wear at night. Supposedly it sends some kind "vibes" into the area to promote blood flow which leads to faster healing. I'm incredibly skeptical about it but as long as my health insurance covers it, I'm willing to give it a go. Heck, it may even work.
Anyways, today is the first day in about five that I haven't been on the verge of puking from the pain. I guess that's a Good Thing. *rolls eyes* And yes, I have Vicodin at home. Can't use it while I'm teaching but helps at night. Well, not with the pain at least. Nothing has been able to help with the pain really. At least with the Vicodin I don't care about the pain. That's about as good as I'm going to get so I can live with it. LOL.
