Remember today...
It was 67 years ago today that the U.S. was pulled into World War II with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. I find it rather ironic that today, as I'm putting together the last of my notes for one of my U.S. history courses, one of our next topics will be about that day.
Did you know that the Japanese actually considered the attack a failure? None of the aircraft carriers they wanted to hit were in port, most of the ships could be repaired, the repair facilities at the port were left undamaged, and so were its oil reserves. I always found that interesting because our history classes portray it as such a devastating blow, which it was.
It also wasn't the only attack of the day...well, technically, the attack day was December 8th due to the international date line. The Philippines, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Malaysia were also attacked as well to weaken the American, British and French forces in the region.
So today I'm bowing my head in honor to those who lost their lives on this tragic day.
Now I'm going to get back to my hell of grading and writing finals.
