Getting Back to Work
So far I have enjoyed two restful weeks of vacation where I did absolutely nothing. That's the way a vacation should really be. However, with my remaining time left in my winter break I finally have to put my nose to the grindstone to get ready for next semester.
One of the biggest issues I have is implementing a grading rubric for my assignments and online discussions. This is mainly to avoid a lot of the crap I got last semester with students claiming I offered no help (yet they did not even bother to talk to me, ask me any questions, nor come by during my office hours), and to prevent another "she's prejudiced against my ethic group" bullshit. This way no one will be able to question why they got a certain grade. I'm even going to provide copies of the rubrics in advance so they'll know what they need to include in their papers. Hopefully it will work.
While there are a number of resources available online, coming up with one to fit my exact assignments is not an easy task. I have to figure out how many points to give what and what should carry the most/least weight. I'll work on it for another hour or two and then I'll take it easy the rest of the night. I am still technically on vacation. :)
P.S. The student who made the accusation was Indian. Honestly, there are only two groups I'm prejudiced against: twits and assholes. No ethnicity, color, or creed involved. This one student is starting to go into the second category if she keeps up the fight. The worst part is that the administration at my college will listen to her. Even my boss suggested that I boost her grade up to a D just to "shut her up." Hopefully nobody will remember once the semester starts because I don't want to deal with this crap.
