"Mar-ty's Better"

As I predicted, the number of Rangers fans at the Devils playoff home opener was pretty high. Though the Devils fans did outnumber them, the Rangers fans made themselves heard with chants of "Let's Go Rangers" and "Hen-rik." Bah. I've lived in NJ for thirteen years now and been a fan of the Devils since I moved here. When I go to Rangers v. Devils games at the Meadowlands, I make sure that I am much louder than those Rangers fans (and believe me...I can be). It was so sweet hearing the chanting switching around after the Devils went up 4-1 of "Mar-ty's Better!" (referring to goalie Martin Brodeur).

I hope we beat the Rangers in this series. Not just because I hate the team, more like I hate their fans. I've had beer thrown at me at games by them, had to stop fights instigated by them, and for years have been constantly heckled by them. I remember when the Devils won the Cup in '95. All the Rangers fans said "it doesn't count 'cause it's a shortened season." Then when the Devils won the Cup in '00 and '03, I hear "well, you didn't go through the Rangers to win it." Bah. At least it didn't take us 60 years to win three Cups. If the Devils win the Cup this year, which I sincerely hope they do, I'll be happy to see them go through the Rangers so I don't have to hear this constant BS from their fans. Why can't they just admit that the Devils have good teams for the past 10+ years?

Anyways, the Devils won 6-1 last night so I'm happy. I doubt the rest of the series will be such a rout. Whenever these two teams play, no matter how bad or good they are, it's always a battle.

God I love hockey. :)

Channeling Ayla

Some of you may remember the world's most famous grump, Ayla. Ya, I miss the old girl too. Well, I don't know what is going on but Phoebe has been channeling her an awful lot lately. She has been very grumpy ever since Kukai passed away. But it's more than that: First I noticed that she started hanging out in "jail" (the footrest under my desk), which was Ayla's favorite spot. Then she seriously started turning into a skutch (e.g., attempting to steal burger from me). Today, I saw her back into a defensive position near Loki and I swear I heard the thwap upside his head as she was thinking it. Mommie Dearest

My life has been hell since October.  Between teaching, grad school, and family issues, I had been looking forward to a relaxing summer.  No grad courses this summer and my teaching load was light enough that I really didn't have to do much work.  I planned many days at the pool, getting my house organized, and my entire list of fall courses fully prepped. Then life happened. Doesn't it always? A lot of it occurred with my dad passing away in May.  I worked in hospice as a social work intern for a year so I know what grief can do.  What I went through was "normal."  He was a good man who I loved dearly so I knew grieving was going to be a part of the equation.  However, I always forget the "mom factor."
