Biological Terrorist

Anybody who goes out when they are very ill, especially sick with the flu, are now susceptible to the label of "biological terrorist" in my books.

One of my students comes into my class last Thursday with the flu. He tells me how miserable he is and then proceeds to sit in the front row. I tell him to go home, but does he? No. What happens? Three days later I'm out sick with the flu.

Normally this wouldn't be so bad but I had already used up two of my sick days at the start of the semester due to my foot surgery. Then I had to use up my last three this week for this stupid flu. Now I'm out of sick days with three months left in the semester.

To me, this student is a biological terrorist. Bah. I hope I give it right back at him when I see him in class tomorrow.

The county health dept. sent us a note through the schools that this year's flu is particularly deadly and advising us to get shots...

Though the news tells us the shots are pretty worthless this year b/c they don't match the strain that is going around.

I hope you're doing ok; that's a lot for your body to go through.

Channeling Ayla

Some of you may remember the world's most famous grump, Ayla. Ya, I miss the old girl too. Well, I don't know what is going on but Phoebe has been channeling her an awful lot lately. She has been very grumpy ever since Kukai passed away. But it's more than that: First I noticed that she started hanging out in "jail" (the footrest under my desk), which was Ayla's favorite spot. Then she seriously started turning into a skutch (e.g., attempting to steal burger from me). Today, I saw her back into a defensive position near Loki and I swear I heard the thwap upside his head as she was thinking it. Is this Phoebe channeling Ayla or am I just getting a new grump in the house? Things will be interesting either way. Mommie Dearest

My life has been hell since October.  Between teaching, grad school, and family issues, I had been looking forward to a relaxing summer.  No grad courses this summer and my teaching load was light enough that I really didn't have to do much work.  I planned many days at the pool, getting my house organized, and my entire list of fall courses fully prepped. Then life happened. Doesn't it always? A lot of it occurred with my dad passing away in May.  I worked in hospice as a social work intern for a year so I know what grief can do.  What I went through was "normal."  He was a good man who I loved dearly so I knew grieving was going to be a part of the equation.  However, I always forget the "mom factor."
