Life Sucks

And here I thought this week couldn't get any worse...

It started out Monday night when I got whammed by a Norwalk-like type virus. Ugh. I hate these things. It was a living hell with 12 hours of pooping and puking stuff up. Now I'm just so weak from the whole thing I can barely move. But that isn't the worst of it.

Today Darren got laid off from his job. No specific reason was giving except "performance issues," but he never got a warning and they wouldn't clarify what they meant. This was completely out of the blue. I feel bad too because I had him stay home from work yesterday to take care of me, which means I may be partially to blame. The poor guy had been working so hard and was finally getting some of his old confidence back. Bah.

I am trying to look at this as a good thing though. Even he'll admit that the stress of his job was getting to be too much for him and they were trying to force him to do a job as tier three help desk, which he really didn't want to do. Maybe this will be a blessing in disguise. I had been after him for a while to get his resume updated and out. Well, now it has been and he has been posting on the web all day. Four people even called with potential jobs too. LOL. So we'll see how it goes. At the very least we have each other, which is the most important thing.

Tier 3??? That's who my Mom would want to talk to to get someone who knows what their stuff. I bet he'd know how to do it - it's just that he'd "want" to do it. Sometimes you just want to go somewhere where they can appreciate what you already know how to do, and do it well.

Channeling Ayla

Some of you may remember the world's most famous grump, Ayla. Ya, I miss the old girl too. Well, I don't know what is going on but Phoebe has been channeling her an awful lot lately. She has been very grumpy ever since Kukai passed away. But it's more than that: First I noticed that she started hanging out in "jail" (the footrest under my desk), which was Ayla's favorite spot. Then she seriously started turning into a skutch (e.g., attempting to steal burger from me). Today, I saw her back into a defensive position near Loki and I swear I heard the thwap upside his head as she was thinking it. Is this Phoebe channeling Ayla or am I just getting a new grump in the house? Things will be interesting either way. I just can't wait to see Loki's reaction when she does act out on the thwap instead of just thinking about it. P.S. Why can't students ever thank me for As? Mommie Dearest

My life has been hell since October.  Between teaching, grad school, and family issues, I had been looking forward to a relaxing summer.  No grad courses this summer and my teaching load was light enough that I really didn't have to do much work.  I planned many days at the pool, getting my house organized, and my entire list of fall courses fully prepped. Then life happened. Doesn't it always? A lot of it occurred with my dad passing away in May.  I worked in hospice as a social work intern for a year so I know what grief can do.  What I went through was "normal."  He was a good man who I loved dearly so I knew grieving was going to be a part of the equation.  However, I always forget the "mom factor."
